Fitzroy Crossing - Geike Gorge 03.08.2012

We only stopped off at Fitzroy Crossing to go and explore Geike Gorge.

Geikie Gorge is situated at the junction of the Oscar and the Geikie Ranges. The Fitzroy River has carved a 30 metre deep gorge into the remains of the ancient limestone barrier reef that existed here in the Devonian period.

When the Fitzroy is in full flood during the wet season it covers the whole national park. Those floods rise over 16 metres up the gorge walls and the continuous rise and fall of the water has left the bottom of the walls bleached white. The walk took about 1 1/2 hours and was mostly sandy, so pretty slow going. Though not my favorite gorge to date, still well worth a look as every gorge is different and offers something unique of it's own.

That night we decided to do a free camp just outside of Fitzroy Crossing which turned out to be quite a scenic little spot on top of some cliffs. The moon coming up was quite spectacular and we settled in for the night amongst other caravans and motorhomes.

a real outback moon
