Port Smith 13.07.2012 to 16.07.2012

We had been told not to go to Port Smith by lots of silvers due to midgies but then others said you cant miss the $5 fish and chip night or the free Sunday breakfast pancakes so left off the highway onto another red dirt road for approx 20km to get to the Port Smith caravan park. I think the Point Smith caravan park may be on aboriginal land of some sort as something was mentioned that part of our fees went to the aboriginals that were stationed a few km away from the caravan park. The Port Smith lagoon is quite a sight and I am glad we didnt just listen to the silvers and head straight to Barn Hill.

It was a very friendly relaxed atmosphere at Port Smith which we both really enjoyed and met up with some nice people infact we got talking to everybody in the free cooking area as we cooked our chops about where they were all from and 2 blokes there knew Orbost (my home town) very well and started dropping names and places which then another bloke brought his sausages in to cook and he was grilled as to where he was from funny enough he was the nephew of my mums best friend from Heyfield and worked in the timber industry in both Heyfield and Orbost areas so then there was more names being dropped.

Rach and I decided to go do some exploring and maybe snorkelling within the lagoon area but didnt find anything really interesting so heading back following a sandbar which I thought would stay shallow enough to walk across but the water got up to Rachs neck so we decided to backtrack and find the original sandbar we walked across on or just don the snorkel and flippers and swim across however along came a couple of old blokes in a tinnie thinking we were stranded gave us a lift back so that gave them something to talk about.

Another thing we liked at Point Smith were the amenities. Instead of having male and female amenities where inside normally are a line of showers and a line of toilets. Well Point Smith had unisex amenities but they were all little separate rooms that was set up like an ensuite with toilet, shower and handbasin all in your own little room so Rach and I got to share a few showers while we were there conserving water of course.
I really liked Port Smith Lagoon and would recommend it.
